Dear Willow Pavilion Community (Clients, Former Clients, Families/Caregivers, Staff, Physicians, Leadership),
Thank you for your input! Your participation in engagement in March 2023 gave us clear themes for what you would like to see in an Indigenous art mural at Willow Pavilion on West 12th Avenue.
Top themes include:
- Willow Pavilion as a safe, welcoming, caring andhealingenvironment.
- Nature – generally communicated with the words, evolution, strength and growth. Other aspects of nature included mountains, ocean, blue sky, flowers and rainbow.
- Indigenous communities – earth, healing, community, heart, animals, and plants frequently mentioned together.
- Animals, such as grizzlies, eagles, orcas and deer.
- Colours – green, blue and yellow.
Next Steps
We sent out a call for artists, looking for an indigenous artist from the Musqueam Band, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, or Squamish Nation to design a mural that will reference these themes. The call asked interested artists to reflect the themes in their concept for the wall mural. The deadline to submit an expression of interest has been extended to June 26.
Background
The Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) care team at Willow Pavilion is committed to creating a welcoming space for Indigenous clients, a creative healing space for all, and honouring the First Nations on whose land the Pavilion is situated.
An exterior wall at Willow Pavilion has been identified for an Indigenous artist to design a mural reflecting the Willow Pavilion and surrounding community. This location will be impactful for staff, clients and the broader community. The mural will be located at 805 W. 12th Avenue, south elevation, and the mural area is approximately 900 square feet (30 feet by 30 feet).
Purpose
VCH wishes to ensure that the Willow Pavilion is a welcoming, culturally safe and inclusive space. As such, VCH has sought through a Call for Artists, an indigenous artist from Musqueam Band, Tsleil-Waututh Nation or Squamish Nation to design a mural for the designated wall in free form or traditional Coast Salish style.
