Do you want to help make VCH more accessible?

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is establishing a Community Accessibility Committee to support the next steps in VCH’s Accessibility Plan. To apply, please complete the Community Accessibility Committee Expression of Interest. More information is included below and within the Terms of Reference.
Note: A VCH Equity team member and a Community Engagement team member will review expressions of interest. They will use pre-determined criteria based on the Accessible British Columbia Act, in the section ‘Accessibility Committee’, to propose a list of potential committee members who best reflect the representation goals identified. Read the part of the Act we are referencing here. This criteria includes:
- At least half of the committee members shall be persons with disabilities
- Representing the diversity of persons with disabilities in BC
- At least two Indigenous persons including First Nations, Métis and Inuit
- Past experience with VCH services, facilities and programs
- Diversity of perspectives represented and not limited to:
- Geographic representation
- Cultural and language diversity
- Age
- Gender identity
- Sexual orientation
What’s the purpose?
To support this work, the Community Accessibility Committee members will provide feedback and support VCH to:
- Help identify barriers for patients, clients and residents with disabilities and their families and caregivers
- Suggest how to remove and prevent such barriers
- Provide feedback on VCH’s on-going process for receiving accessibility feedback from the public
- Provide input on VCH’s engagement plans to gather feedback from the public
For more information, please check out the draft Terms of Reference. It will be finalized with the members of the Community Accessibility Committee.
Who should apply?
We are inviting the following people to apply:
- Community members (patients, residents, clients), with disabilities and/or a dedication to advance accessibility
- Caregivers and family members, with disabilities and/or a dedication to advance accessibility
- Community organizations serving people with disabilities
How can you get involved?
You are invited to apply to be a member of the Community Accessibility Committee by completing an Expression of Interest (please scroll below to complete it).
If you would prefer to complete the Expression of Interest through a word document, email or phone call, please let us know by emailing accessibility@vch.ca or calling 604-708-5251. If you need any other support to apply for the committee, please let us know.
Is there an honorarium?
An honorarium of $25 per hour will be made available if you are:
- A patient, client, resident, family member and/or caregiver who may need assistance with respite or childcare to participate, and/or
- identify as a seldom-heard voice—such as those facing discrimination or bias due to age, cultural background, sexual orientation, disability or income.
Our goal is to support equity and equitable approaches to engagement, and to decrease barriers to participating in this Committee.
What is the deadline for this engagement opportunity?
Apply by December 19, 2025. If the applicant pool doesn’t provide the diversity or lived experience representation required, the selection panel may choose to reserve some seats while further focused recruitment continues.
What is the commitment?
- Frequency: the committee will meet virtually four times per year, for up to 1.5 hours. Additional opportunities to contribute within the year may become available.
- Duration: 2 years
- Dates: to be determined
- Timing: to be determined - based on the times shared in the application form that work for the most people.
