What are we doing?

The VCH Ethics Service is currently recruiting individuals with lived or living experience as a patient and/or family member / caregiver to join the Regional Ethics Committee (REC). The REC supports the VCH Ethics Service’s mission to cultivate and support a culture and practice of ethical responsibility and accountability throughout VCH.

The REC has three main responsibilities:

  • Case Consultations: Examine difficult healthcare situations, gain insights from an ethics perspective, and make recommendations.
  • Policy/Guidelines: Review policies, decision support tools (DSTs), guidelines, or frameworks related to ethical concerns.
  • Quality Assurance: Provide ongoing quality assurance measures to strengthen VCH Ethics Services, including peer review of some of the Ethicists’ consultations.


How can you get involved?

You can get involved by joining the REC, where your role will include virtual attendance at six scheduled meetings throughout the year and participating in ad hoc urgent consult requests as available.


Who should apply?

Individuals with lived or living experience as a patient and/or family member/caregiver who are interested in contributing to ethical discussions and quality assurance in healthcare.


What is the attendance format?

  • Members are expected to attend virtual meetings (e.g., Zoom) at six scheduled meetings in the year for 1.5 hours each.
  • Meetings are held from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm on the 2nd Wednesday of the month (except there are no scheduled meetings for March, July, August, and December).
  • It is desired that members sit for a 2-year term, renewable for up to 8 years. The next scheduled meeting is on September 11th, 2024.
