Public Advisor Recruitment-Seeking Patients/Family with Lived Experience with Asthma or COPD

What are we doing?

The Community Engagement team is supporting a new planning‑stage initiative at Vancouver General Hospital focused on improving how inhaler education and counselling are delivered to people living with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Metered‑dose inhalers are commonly used in asthma and COPD care. There is growing interest in ensuring inhaler prescribing and education are both clinically appropriate and environmentally responsible. This pharmacist‑led project aims to develop and refine patient‑facing education and counselling materials, such as inhaler counselling sheets, to support informed decision‑making, correct inhaler use, and understanding of different inhaler options.

An important part of this work is engaging people with lived or living experience to ensure materials reflect real‑world patient needs and experiences.

How you can get involved?

CEAN members can share their lived or living experience by:

  • Reviewing draft patient education materials (including inhaler counselling sheets)
  • Sharing feedback on clarity, relevance, and usefulness
  • Participating in guided discussions or feedback sessions led by the project team

Your input will help ensure the materials are:

  • Clear and easy to understand
  • Relevant to patient, caregiver, and family experiences
  • Supportive of self‑management and transitions in care
  • Empowering for people making decisions about inhaler use

Engagement will be at the inform and consult level. Feedback will directly inform improvements to patient‑facing materials. Clinical decision‑making, prescribing criteria, and safety standards will continue to be guided by established clinical evidence and standards.

Who should apply?

  • CEAN members with lived experience of asthma or COPD, including patients, caregivers, or family members
  • Members who are interested in contributing to improvements in education, counselling, and patient understanding of inhaler use

What is the attendance format?

Participation may include:

  • Review of materials with written or verbal feedback
  • One‑time or short‑term feedback sessions
  • Group or individual discussions

Timing:

The engagement phase is expected to be completed by August 21, 2026.

Location:

  • Virtual meetings
