Background

Research suggests there are profound positive benefits to integrating a variety of art into the delivery of health care for patient healing and well-being. There is extensive evidence that the integration of art and good design into healthcare facilities assists in the reduction of stress and improves outcomes and patient safety, and that it impacts the overall quality of care provided.

In early 2022, a Paul Myers Tower Art Committee was established to enhance the healing culture in the new Paul Myers Tower (PMT) (Medical and Surgical Centre) at Lions Gate Hospital through the arts. The Art Committee is responsible for sourcing and acquiring art for the art collection in the PMT, which will create a culturally sensitive and safe environment, particularly as regards the expectations of the two Host First Nations, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Úxwumixw and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
